Empire round table

This table has been made according to the measurements of an existing antique table. The outline and the size of the table do follow the line of the original one, which has been made in Empire style in Russia around 1810 – 1820. The type of decorative veneer has been changed from burr of poplar as it has been mentioned on the drawing to English walnut. And the feet were designed, partly by Yuri Karpov, and casted especially for this table. The wood that has been used for the construction is northern pine and plywood (multiplex) for the table top, low base and four legs. The round support under the top has been made entirely out of pine using construction method known as a brick building. The edge around the table top has been made from 117 solid blocks of walnut. The process of assembling the blocks around the edge and the final result is shown on two pictures below.

The decorative finish on the table is a shellac hand polish. The swans that seats in front of four legs are carved out of lime wood and meant to be finally gilded and lacquered. Unfortunately the table still remains unfinished due to lack of financial support. According to the original design there are two armchairs were planned to be made in the same style to accompany the table and complete the trio set.

The work could be continued at any moment if a client would be founded who appreciates the design and would like to own the trio. So far 255 hours has been spend on the table already. Yuri has started to make this table in 2000 in Scotland , where the feet have been also designed and casted in the professional metal workshop near Peebles, East Lothian .
