Yuri Karpov welcomes students and individuals who are interested in learning Conservation & Restoration techniques and methods as well as Traditional Cabinetmaking & Fine Woodworking techniques. Who has made a decision to dedicate own life time in order to gain knowledge and practical skills in those professions.

Yuri Karpov does not want to convince or encourage anyone to join this uneasy way. It is a vital that a person who wishes to become one of Yuri's students should have made a choice which profession to follow long time before. Meaning basic knowledge and practical experience in Cabinetmaking or Conservation & Restoration field are must to have. This should be shown in personal Portfolio.

Yuri Karpov has right to accept as well as to reject an applicant. The reasons for both actions would be explained and discussed personally during the interview.

Before to make an appointment for an interview an applicant should be aware of :

  • The language of communication is primarily English, unless you are fluent in Russian
  • Food and drink during the tuition program must be provided by the future student
  • To have well presented as well as to be able to explain orally own personal Portfolio
  • The tuition program could be specially structured for the applicant (future student)
  • The costs of tools, materials and Yuri's tuition time must be covered by the applicant (future student) personally or his relatives
  • The time frame for the applicant (future student) could be also personally structured but could not be less than 5 hours per week and in length shorter than an academic year (important for the skills and knowledge). The course contains 9 months where Christmas and Easter vacancies have two weeks off each. During which workshop will be closed. The tuition program is preferably starts from September of each year and finishes at the end of July. If necessary the program could be started from any other month during the year but must be discussed with Yuri in advance.
  • An applicant (future student) must have sympathy or positive understanding for Yuri's Philosophy & Ethics

An applicant (future student) could be dismissed and freed from the tuition program at any moment without any refund if following would have taken a place:

  • Deliberate damage of any objects, tools or materials in Yuri Karpov's workshop
  • Stealing
  • Strong ethical and practical disagreement
  • An applicant's (future student) disability to learn and communicate
  • Deliberate use of inappropriate tools and materials
  • Systematical change of the tuition program (time frame as well as subjects)
  • An applicant's (future student) reject to follow Yuri's practical tasks and strong advises
  • Deliberate use of any machinery or tools without Yuri's supervision
  • Drinking an alcoholic liquids as well as smoking in the workshop
  • An applicant's reject to follow the workshop timetable

Cost of a tuition program for an applicant (future student) based on:

  • Hour rate of Yuri's tuition, which is 65 euros per hour, excluding 21% VAT. This time is equal to the number of hours which future student would spend in the workshop.
  • Cost of materials. Depends on the projects which future student would have liked to accomplish during his program.
  • Cost of tools if any new tools are required for accomplishing some of future student's projects.

Yuri Karpov does not want to pass his unique knowledge and teach to some special and complicated techniques anyone. But he is willing to help those who are talented and passionate about Conservation & Restoration as well as Fine Woodwork.

These are techniques and specializations which could be thought in Yuri Karpov workshop-studio:

  • Fine joinery
  • Hand alcohol based lacquering and polishing as well as waxing
  • Wood carving and fret work
  • Traditional water and oil gilding and silvering
  • Marquetry, parquetry and inlay work
  • Conservation and restoration of fine antique furniture and important wooden interior objects
  • Cleaning of antique decorative surfaces
  • Distressing restored decorative surfaces
  • Making and designing new piece of furniture based on classical examples (drawings of antique furniture)
  • Copying antique furniture

Yuri Karpov remains the right to choose his potential future students from those who apply for personal tuition. Who he believes will continue to learn and discover in Conservation & Restoration as well as in Fine Cabinetmaking not for the own profit but for the future and future generations.

At the end of the tuition program a Certificate would be granted to those students who have successfully accomplished their tasks, meaning a feeler is possible. Where no Degree or a Level of education would be mentioned as Yuri's tuition is strictly private and has no official Government recognition as a School, College or University. But complexity and level of works that has been accomplished by a student would be mentioned on his Certificate. This has different recognition among other Diplomas and Degrees. The knowledge and skills that were obtained and learnt during Yuri's tuition would be more powerful and sufficient to any true specialist in Conservation & Restoration as well as Fine Cabinetmaking field than any other writing proof of having such skills and knowledge.

During the appointment an applicant would have to present:

  • Well presented Portfolio of personal practical experience
  • A passion and necessity to become an expert in Conservation & Restoration or in Fine Cabinetmaking
  • A determination to learn, this might lead to change student's own view
  • A talent
  • A strong wish and ability to extent own level of quality
  • An ability to handle stress and psychological pressure on a positive way
  • Well communicative skills
  • Two good colored photos 3x4
  • Own financial resources or financial support from the relatives to cover a tuition program in full
  • Letters from two reputable referees working on Conservation & Restoration or Fine woodworking fields (not relatives). Who could mark applicant's practical skills and knowledge from a professional point of view.

Please do not be disappointment if you would be rejected to become a student in Yuri Karpov's workshop-studio just be aware of it is possible.
